What are "leveraged" ETF's?

For instance, the ProShares UltraShort S&P 500 ETF (SDS) is described as a "leveraged" ETF that shorts the S&P and returns at a 2 to 1 ratio.

What do they actually do to make their ETF "leveraged" - the mechanics of the method, I mean?

What's the best way to play the agriculturers sector (corn, wheat, rice, oats) via long ETF's?

I'm thinking this sector is a good bet for upward motion. People will always need to eat and widespread drought conditions will shorten field yields. People usually eat more when in stressed times so some of the discretionary spending being cut down will go toward more food than usual. Eating relieves stress.

If I win a Pick Six at a hosre race track, I get the payout for that but do I also get the Pick Five payout?

Pick Six is won when you pick the winner of each of the designated six races. Payouts are for those betters who have picked all six winners, which leads to the biggest payoff. But, there is also a payout for those picking only five winners, a much lesser payout.

So, if I bet horse numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6 respectively in the Pick Six races and they come in, say the payouts for that particular Pick Six on that day were:

Pick Six pays $10,000.00
Pick Five pays $800.00

will I get both payouts since I have the numbers for both payouts even though they are on the same ticket?

Say my portfolio generally follows the SP-500. I buy puts (SPY) as insurance to cover the full value of my portfolio of $100,000. The options to cover this amount cost me $3,740. The market flattens out and the options eventually expire worthless. Is that $3,740 loss tax deductable?

Seems a day of rekoning must come since most of the large financial institutions are heavy into these mysterious transactions most of which are unreported and not on balance sheets. The big guys such as BofA. Citibank, JPMorgan and most others will have to come clean soon. No?

Many billions stashed there as a safe haven. Fed may need use of that dough since they can't keep on printing money forever, so convert to long term and maybe even limit withdrawal priveliges on those. So I heard. Is it possible?
