If your trading a short term vertical spread on a stock, and the stock hits the target price, should you sell?
If your trading short term vertical spreads (less then a month) on a stock, and the stock hits your target price, should you close the position immediately? Frequently the vertical spread will be ITM, yet the value you can sell it for is less then its intrinsic value. I frequently find that the stock price hits my target, and both options in the vertical spread are completely ITM, yet the vertical spread is only worth $3.50-$4.00 vs. the $5.00 difference in strike prices. When your in that position, should you wait for expiration to receive the full $5, or should the position be closed for a smaller profit to lock in gains?

What is your prognosis of the stock. Will it go up down or sideways? In what timeframe? what will IV do? Answer these questions and adjust the trade to suit or close. You will never lose money taking a profit.
If you think the stock may stay where it is or go up, perhaps look at a hedge to at least lock in some of the profits.

Once a vertical spread hits the price of the sold option, it is impossible to make any further profit. Closing out the trade is the logical way to go. If you think that the directional move is strong enough and is going to continue, put on a new vertical spread using higher strikes. The technical term is rolling up (to a higher price). The final result is closing the first spread and entering a new one regardless of your terminology If you are really confident, you could use the profit from the first spread as your cost reducer and simply buy a plain long call. (On a long spread, the second option reduces your opening cost. On a short or credit spread, the second option, costs money, but the buy leg is protection from the dangers of having a sold "naked option.)
