Can anyone make money with Linux?

Will RedHat, Novell SuSE, etc be able to make significant money when their primary focus is on an open source operating system, or will they always remain relatively small? It seems that anyone who really wanted to use Linux would choose to hire and/or train Linux expertise in house rather than pay someone else to do it.
