Did Intel quit too quickly with its ViiV line up?

This company put a lot of money and a big marketing budget into ViiV - it's line of chips for home entertainment devices - Intel's push "into the living room" could have been huge for the company. What should they do now? What does it mean for the stock?

Like so many efforts Intel has made in the past it dabbles but is not fully committed to the marketing of consumer products long term. ViiV has a number of competitors. If anything Intel inspires other companies to use technology in areas it has introduced or dabbled in. It often creates new interest in a market segment and then sells its products to companies in the segment. Intel is constantly looking for a market that will give it a ROI similar to what it has in CPUs for computers. That market return is awfully hard to come by.

Notice how the partnership with Apple Inc has inspired both companies. Intel helped optimize the new Apple Leopard operating system for working on the Intel CPUs. Microsoft's new OS is a dog in the market. Apple Inc. is reaping the benefits with a big boost in profits and market share.

Sorry about that last one - I think they realized it wasn't their core competency. I don't think this is a negative for the company or the stock, in fact I'm encouraged that they're going to have more bandwidth to focus on their core semiconductor offerings.

If you can't already tell I'm a big bull on Intel.
