Why do you answer questions on TickerHound?
What makes you want to answer questions on TickerHound? There are a lot of members who take the time out of their busy days to come to TickerHound and answer tough questions on finance and investing. I'm curious as to what makes you "tick" (so to speak)...what motivates you to help build and educate this great community?

For me at least, its the combination of having the spare time, learning something along the way, and my competitive nature. I'm on the internet anyways, on facebook, or on msn, or perfecting my stock screens, so I see no reason not to compete for the most points on here at the same time :p The fact that I'm helping people is like icing on the cake.

I agree with Chaos Nantuko. I too spend a lot of time working on the internet, am very competitive, and this site has become my healthy addiction! Plus, it meets two of my needs: To help educate others with what I know, and to help educate myself from others who know things that I don't. It also feels like a community here, and no matter how large the site becomes, I hope we don't ever lose that. The guy above me on this answer blows my mind almost every single day with his far reaching knowledge. When I learned he was still in high school, I almost fell out of my chair! His future star is very, very bright!
There are many others on this site who have excellent skills and knowledge as well. And unlike other financial blog sites, I only see intelligent, serious answers here. Nobody is cussing at each other, or ranting on about politicians, or other frivolous pastimes. Maybe Wayne deletes those, so we don't see them, but I appreciate being able to log on here and learn and grow, without distraction.
Also an interesting thing has happened. My own stock performance has been improving lately, due to the research that answering others' questions often entails. In fact, I am starting to keep a log of stocks and ETF's that other people, as well as myself recommend.
Final point. I hope everyone on this site appreciates the tremendous job that Wayne Mulligan has done in putting Tickerhound together. No pop up ads, no self-serving testimonials, etc. I often wonder how this site will continue without the usual google ad revenue, but from reading about Wayne's background, I know that this web site is the cullmination of years of hard work and dedication. A previous question was about achieving financial success by doing the work you love , and somehow I know that Wayne will derive both from Tickerhound. It has been an honor to be one of the many people who were asked by Wayne to provide feedback on the site.

Some of the questions seem to be "real", in the sense that they are basic or specifics. Others are just noise. Some are the same in several different categories. Perhaps in the future, one could cross-link the queries. But for me, it's an avocation...I'm retired for some time; have invested and made plenty of "mistakes" over the past 50 years.
There's a lot of "conventional wisdom" out there which may work for professionals with research departments, and computerized risk analysis, but for most beginners, for the people overseas, and for the bewildered ... conventional won't work. Take the fellow from Vietnam, he has a problem of limited securities access. Or another fellow, who wants assessment of the palm oil/rubber commodities for investment... they're not traded here, and biodiesel and rubber are tiny components of the bigger commodity ETFs and futures..
There are a lot of questions that seem to want a sure road to riches...but only investment advisories promise that. The only thing I can do is to indicate some other ideas, info sources and possible ways to gradually increase one's wealth, and some things to watch out for in certain investment classes.
I also like to read other's answers to the myriad questions. it's a refreshing format.

I wish I had more time to participate on this site. I think it's a great resource. I spend much of my free time reading what others are asking and answering. I concider what question I might be able to contribute to in postive way, but more often than not by the time I've figured out what I want to say, I'm out of time and my life calls me back. What I have found though, is that I'm thinking more seriously about the questions and that adds a great deal to my own learning process.
Strangely enough, all of you who answer frequently are becoming a part of my world, and I am happy to have you in it. Thanks for your insightful answers and thanks Wayne, this is becoming quite a community!

Their is something gratifying about being able to answer such questions. Answering ticker questions forces me to think about topics I know yet may not think of to much.
I am also fond of the community and want to know who is who and reliable when I have a question.
All in a ll I like the free flow of information!

I rather enjoy passing along knowledge. If you stop and think about it, education is what has made this country great and that is why this country is in such a bad way today, more folks see value in guarding thieir knowledge and using it against someone rather than using education to enrich us all.
