Is there a list of indices somewhere that explains what all of the indices track?

I recently heard of a subprime index, which I didn't really think existed. I'm curious what other useful index's are out there that i don't know about. Does anyone know where i can find a list of all (or most) of the index's out there, as well as an explanation of what they track?

Chaos, I too am not sure for what you are looking, but http://stockcharts.com/symsearch/ has a list of 998 $indices. Should you find some that you like, enter that symbol in the http://finance.yahoo.com/ "get quote" box. If a number is given in Indices box, click on that. This will bring up a list that you can click on. That will give the index value. On the left is "components" under quotes. If it is highlighted, click on that which will indicate the components of that index. Note, however, that many of these indices do not have components.
