I would recommend that you buy the Investors Business Daily. They have charts all the time that show the strongest and weakest sectors and the stocks in those sectors.
You can also go to yahoo.com, click on their finance link, then go to the investing tab, and industries. There you will also find the strongest sectors. Good luck!

If you want to find strongest stock in strongest sector you have to compare performance of all the companies in that sector. The best stock will be company who generates reliable earnings continuously, higher demand for their product and services, strong management, strong balance sheet with the best investment ratios.
However today strong stock is will be weak stock in the future if fundamentals go against this stock. Therefore, it is wise to analyze future directions including future earnings of the company to determine strong stock in the strongest sector.

Strong sectors have strong companies, strong earnings, and it can influence market directions. Therefore anybody can easily select strong sectors. However strong sectors differ from country to country. For example Australian commodity sector is very strong. They have some of largest commodity companies in the world. For me financial sector is the strongest sector in the world. Although there are other strong sectors in the stock market they can change time to time. Those sectors are: commodity sector including power sector, technology sector, health sector, building and housing sector, Agriculture sector etc. For my best bet for 2008 and 2009 are: Agriculture, farm and animal production sector and financial stocks including (in some emerging and frontier markets). But we must always remember sometimes Today’s strongest sector will be weakest sector in the future.

although the answers given above are correct and very good answers. i would like to address the strongest sector and strongest stock situation from another stand point. when looking for the strongest stocks to invest in, 1 must also look for stocks that appear strong yet have not been noticed by the general public yet. cause otherwise, you will just be chasing hot stocks and maybe miss out on most of the upside potential. its best to get in on the ground floor so to speak ,before anyone else has seen what you have seen with this company , to realize most of the upside when it does catch on.
so though wall street might be a good place to look, its possible, that by the time it hits the wall street journal, most will already know about it, and much of that upside could already be gone .

Another good place to look online is InvestorsIntelligence.com.

It is a paid subscription, but reasonably priced for all the information they give you.

The founders of Investors Intelligence are the creators of the BPI, or Bullish Percent Index. The BPI is an internal indicator that gives the percentage of stocks in a given group that are on a Point and Figure buy signal.

My suggestion would be to go over to The Tycoon Report and read Chris Rowe's article titled "Why This is an Historic Buying Opportunity in the Stock Market for You." The link for the Tycoon Report is: TheTycoonReport.com

Another note about Investors Intelligence, you can get a free one month trial. Again, go over to Chris's article and you will find a link that his students use for his CHRISS course, and buy going through that link, you will also get a 10% discount.

See You at the TOP,
Sharon
