Low-cost index tracking funds
What are the lowest cost index tracking funds available? I have found some by Legal&General and also Fidelity; they charge around 0.5% to 1.0%.

Dunno about that: Vanguard is a pretty good index funds; watch out for the 'hiddens' on ETF's:

Well, I wouldn't use Index funds -- you can buy an ETF that tracks an index and pay NONE of the management fees.
The Yahoo! Finance ETF Center is a great place to start:

Good luck!

Go to SeekingAlpha.com, section on ETF's is enormous, including in depth reviews and analysis of similar sounding ones and their fees. In addition, check out Vanguard's Vipers, which are low fee sector funds.

There's a new post by Larry SWEDROE on SeekingAlpha.com, about the "HiddenTrading" fees of even the lowest cost ETFs. Just go to the site, go to the ETF section, and type his name in at the search bar, and you'll see a listing of his posts.
