Microsoft has been stuck in the 20-30 point range since Bill Gates stepped down as CEO. It will only get worse when he steps away from the company completely(I think this is in August but not completely sure). Nothing positive and groundbreaking is coming out of Microsoft in the near future and they are not offering anything that will change user patterns(no compelling reason to upgrade all systems to the new windows version like companies did in the late 90s).

Even if the purchase of Yahoo! goes through the value from that will not be seen for years(it will take a huge engineering effort to integrate the 2 systems but keep both sets of user experiences, which if lost would cost them a huge number of users).

Also the internal culture of Microsoft has gone from one of enthusiasm and innovation to interoffice politics with a tech flair that is slowing new products and groundbreaking features from getting to the customer in a timely fassion.(I have worked for them)

So at this point I would not put money into Microsoft.

Bill Gates also has a ton of shares that he likes to unload to fund his charitable foundation. I don't know that the price will ever get too high with his increased focus on charity, and thus his likely increased need to sell more shares which would keep the price from moving up too much. He's like a huge hedge fund all by himself, greatly influencing what the stock price does.

I have a suspicion that Microsoft release software and operating systems in a form that is little better than beta. This reduces time to market, and cuts down on the costs for in-house testing.

They then get all the mugs (once called customers) who buy a new release to report bugs to them (as in-house testers used to) and these bugs are then, generally, fixed.

It might work from a revenue perspective, but it's an entirely disrespectful way to deal with your customer base. On this basis alone, I wouldn't buy into Microsoft.
