Any "techies" out there: What do you make of Google's latest announcement?

Yesterday Google announced that it would be kicking off a new service called "App Engine". It's going to help web sites get built faster and be more reliable. Is this a new business model for the or will it help them sell more ads?

So far, developers can only use the Python programming language with Google AppEngine. That means that it can only be easily ported over to Google if was originally built in Python. Websites with built with other popular languages such as PHP or Ruby on Rails would have to rewrite the whole thing or wait for support for their language. Who knows how long that'll take. Amazon already has similar services (S3, EC2) that have less limitations.
If the Google AppEngine does catch on, it could provide an easy way for websites to include the ads but I don't think that will be the profit points for Google. The money will come from the service fees.

I guess Windows is lagging behind as an operating system. I heard so many complaints about vista. To those I recommended Mepis Linux 7.0, they simply took it, and ran with it, without complaints. I would reject the offer of any Windows for free plus a $500.00 gift if I had to use it myself. The mirror where I got my Linux made 5.5 Million downloads, while Apple sold 200,000 Leopards within 2 weeks. This can't be confortable MSoft.

well at first glance, i might have said game over for Microsoft , but i was unaware of amazon having a similar system in place. still, if Google can quickly make this system where it supports many of the most popular formats in existence, i think it can keep them in the lead for years to come. help solidify their economic moat so to speak.

This one move, to host software developers on Google servers, alone will not be "game over" in Google's favor but enough successful open source initiatives and they will take away much of Microsoft's market share. Microsoft is very intelligent. They saw some of this but could not block Google's progress using their business model. The only way to win long term is to adopt a more open model for software development and delivery. To compete it will require short term losses Microsoft was previously unwilling to take. As noted by others, Microsoft's Vista OS is a disaster. It can't be optimized for both Intel and AMD. Apple used help from the Intel software experts to optimize the Leopard OS for the Intel CPU. This make it much more efficient than Microsoft's Vista.

Google promotes open office software that is free. It competes with Microsoft's very expensive office suite of software. The open source model will win in time. Microsoft will lose market share if they don't embrace more open source methods.

Google is not stopping with software. They will have a cell phone standard that will change the cost structure of cell phones. This is an amazing company.
