Once a day. Any more than that would drive me crazy unless I was day trading.

As a novice investor (24 yrs young), I check 3-5 times a day just to try and understand the flow of the market better. If there is a large dip/jump, I read into what possible explanations there are, along with reaction to news (good or bad), and reaction to earnings. I have found that I tend to 'catch the falling knife' still. I believe it is partially from reacting to large dips to early from looking at the stocks too often; however, now is the time to learn!

My watch lists arrive each day after 7PM, via e-mail from the brokerage, and there's 8 for the different portfolios. I selected that time, because the mutual fund holdings' prices take time after the market close to update. I don't trade options or day-day.

Critical stop-loss info (when a security is approaching a predetermined price during the day) arrives within a few minutes, but that's not a frequent occurrence.
