I'm definitely going to be buying a Pharmaceuticals ETF in the next few months as I believe this is a solid long-term investment, especially at current prices. I would prefer one which includes some exposure to generics manufacturers if this exists, but I am still researching if this exists.
Interesting article in The Economist a couple of weeks ago on Big Pharma. Suggesting that Pharma has been slow to build their portfolio of diseases most common in the 'poor world' (e.g. malaria, HIV) due to lack of profitability there. However there are signs that this is now changing. Certainly emerging markets should open up large revenue streams for these companies, just consider the massive Asian population. However one limitation to growth in China and surrounding region could be lack of willingness to switch to 'Western' medicine from more traditional 'Chinese' medicine. Anecdotally I believe that Western meds is becoming more popular in China, but I don't have any figures.
