Should some of the big auto-makers merge?

Seems like the only way to "fix" things in Detroit. Thoughts?

Merging won't doe any good , they have to improve fuel economy significantly to survive.

I concur. Putting two or three bad companies together, won't make a good one. On the other hand, if one of the Japanese names swallowed an American company and assumed it's liabilities, you'd really only be weakening the Japanese company. So that wouldn't necessarily help either.

If Detroit has large automakers merging, and they start to put pressure on the Japanese companies, would Toyota and Honda end up talking about a merger and put all the pressure back on the US companies anyway?
