Interestingly enough, Berkshire Hathaway itself was a failed investment. Granted it's got a monster market cap now and its the primary vehicle Buffett uses to make all of his investments, the original Berkshire Hathaway investment Buffett made was in an entirely different company. Berkshire was originally a textile company in Boston. Buffett really thought it was a good investment and he'd be able to turn the company around.

Things didn't quite work out and ultimately they shuttered the textile business. But Buffett ended up keeping the public shell to acquire other companies with.

U. S. Airways was a completely failed investment for Warren Buffet. If took him several years before he dumped it when he finally realized that is was not possible to make money in the airline industry because costs can't be controlled and competition holds down ticket prices.
