Based on a quick glance of each company's financial statements they both look rock solid. Good revenue and profit growth and solid cash flow growth to accompany that (I like to look at cash flow as a validation of a company's performance). However, as you can see the market is really favoring Covanta at the moment and the shares don't seem to be undervalued. I know you were looking at this as more of a growth opportunity but I still think you have a better shot at getting more bang for your buck with WMI. It's only trading at a P/E of 15 and has been holding its own in this market.
I'm with WMI.
