Yes, China is still a socialist/communist society that has seen the merits of a more free economic system. However the Chinese gov't can and will react to situations that could lead to economic upheaval. The risk for investing there as a result is more substantial than in other markets but the rewards can be huge.

The thrust of primitive man is to adapt to his environment to suit him.
The thrust of western culture is to adjust his environment to suit him.
The thrust of communism is to control mankind to suit the state.
I don't think China's economic success has changed anything, do you?

Yes it is still a centrally controlled economy that makes it communist/socialist. It may be drifting toward fascism which is another tightly controlled state wherein the citizens exist only to serve the needs of the state and have minimal or no individual rights. China does not have freedom (ask a Tibetian) and allows some capitalism to exist only because it currently serves the purposes of the state.
