I'm not sure they'll need to merge at this point. With Morgan Stanley being reorganized as a bank holding company, they'll have a much easier time of getting financing and once they start rolling up smaller, regional banks their balance sheet should greatly improve. I think they still might be able to make it on their own. I wouldn't be a buyer yet (for obvious reasons) but I also wouldn't bet on a Wachovia merger.
