I covered my APPL shorts Monday and still have some GOOG short.

I'd say it's time to short both if there's a rally on the bailout scam going through. Both will go much lower. Massively overvalued.

Google's not making money off of its Android operating system. It's an open platform and doesn't do anything for Google's business directly. So I wouldn't consider it a "competitor" to the iPhone - maybe more of a competitor to Windows Mobile, but not the iPhone.

The iPhone is a bundled system - hardware and software co-joined - and has become a brand name/status symbol. I don't think the Android system will ever do that.

It'll merely be a way for phone providers to have a cheap alternative to proprietary OS's or Windows Mobile.

It might help Google gain some traction in the mobile ad market, but even then, it would be nothing compared to its web business. It'll be YEARS and YEARS before they begin to see any significant revenue from mobile.

I don't really consider them competitors, athough they my impression may be outdated. To me, Apple makes excellent computers and phones (and now provides content), Google is an excellent search engine (though less useful as the company increasingly looks for ad revenue and more intrusive as it collects ever-more information on its users; I use Cuil when possible because of the privacy issue).
I see AAPL and MSFT as competitors, GOOG and YHOO (and now AOL and Earthlink, I guess, for us oldtimers). But without providing Internet access, the browser is not a revenue source, as mentioned by Market101.
