How does this bailout compare to that of the Savings & Loans in the 1980s?
P.S. To set the record straight for anyone who saw my previous answer to the question regarding profitability of the current bailout, which led me to ask this question, McCain, while one of the "Keating Five" was cleared of improper action but not of poor judgement.

In brief., it's a lot bigger.
In specific reference...a lot of the yahoos who pushed for it were the ones who are responsible for this mess,, deregulation and overlooking oversight of Freddie and Fannie; removing the uptick rule; thinking Sarbanes-Oxley and FAS157 would compensate for executive greed or stupidity; believing that "naked shorting" doesn't occur...because no one's looked (the SEC had no funding or support from either party to enforce 7/10 of its regulations. because the private capital/hedge fund cabal spent a lot to prevent that!)...I could go on and give you the names and dates and votes in either party, back into the early Clinton Era, Even the removal of the Glass-Stiegel (sp.?) separation of banks that take deposits from investment houses that create or market securities, which was enacted to safeguard the thrifts in the last depression, has led to the crazy leverage at Citi, BAC, WA, WM, etc., this separation was removed to make U.S. capital markets "more competitive" with foreign ones...LOL.
So the people, in and out of Congress and the Treasury, who created this mess are the one's trying to fix it. And neither of the parties has an awareness of the prior acts/inaction that caused it...nor does "the man in the street' who can read headlines, but will soon be standing in breadlines.
