TBone, although past performances are not indicative of future performances (as they say in the mutual fund ads), Visa has clearly outperformed MasterCard over the past 5 months, both long and short term. So if I were making the decision for myself, I would certainly buy Visa over Mastercard.

Several months ago I asked the same question and discovered one major difference between the two companies, besides price. Unless the situation has changed, investors in Mastercard reap the benefit of credit card transactions worldwide whereas Visa stockholders' profits come from transactions in the U.S. only. If this is accurate, shares in Mastercard should provide the potential for greater returns than Visa.
