A really scary scenario!

There isn't anyone can predict exactly what will happen. I think that there will be some kind of bailout, hopefully with a great many concessions and strings attached to it. First, the upper management that's in place in the Big Three have demonstrated how poorly they have done their job. They need to be replaced. Second, the UAW needs to be addressed and they also need to make a great many concessions and do their part to save the industry. I think they suck but in their defense, in the past years they simply did their job of getting as much for the union emplyees as they could. The Big Three simply conceeded to the union demands because business was good and they didn't want any strikes and shutdowns that would stop the money flowing in. The UAW was simply demanding everything they could get for their members: that's what unions do. And the Big Three said "Okay! Okay! We don't want to stop the money flow!"

I certainly hope the government works out some kind of wise helping hand. I hate the word "bailout." The American taxpayer who finances the play deserves people in Washington that have their interests in mind and not the interests of special groups or friends of our politicians.

Without some kind of fix I'm afraid the economy will be in for a bad bump. And, I might add, when we do it for the auto industry there will be a long line forming for their bailout, like the credit card industry, etc, etc.

The U.S. car companies have more factories in Canada and Mexico so all of North America would get hurt. Conversely German and Japanese manufacturers have built many car factories in the U.S. They have the staying power to go on and their sales should start to increase and their workers and suppliers will prosper. It is time to let to let Ford, GM, Chrysler and especially the United Auto Workers die. A bail out would just perpetuate bad management and a very bad union.

People lose their jobs, the companies get smaller more efficient and perhaps produce a good product. They should be allowed to fail as all the others who were bailed out sohld have been allowed to fail. Chances of them not being bailed out are slim, and will only prolonge the downturn.

In more normal times, it would be a localized crater in the economy, but in today's market, I think the market will tailspin if it happens. The market will overreact, and as it stands today, it doesn't have room for this. The market is reacting to the inability of Congress to act and dragging everything down.
