Holiday shopping season starts this week.. predictions?

I'm no economist here but I'm predicting a pretty piss-poor retail season. Forgive the language, but just based on what I'm personally doing and what I'm hearing from a lot of my friends (just laid off, cutting back on non-essentials, etc.), I can't see the retailers 'cleaning up' this season.

I think some of the discounters will do mildly well but the higher priced, specialty retailers will probably get creamed. At best we might see some mild top-line growth due to heavy discounting, but profits will suffer and that's ultimately what we need to be looking at.
