with new handsets out and the shopping season in full-ish gear, do you think they'll close the year on a good note?

Recent bad reviews on their latest product, stock is exhibiting little relative strength and moves with the markets, Dec 18 earnings - I would not buy and hold. Wait until earnings comes out and see how the market reacts.

Good note, probably. Good enough for me to invest in them-no. They said that sales were down 10% on the quarter ending last month. That with a record number of new subscribers at the end of the month (due in part to the Pearl). One downside of RIM is their failure to execute in a timely manner, allowing other companies, like Palm and Apple to take customers. And RIM is now in the consumer market, which is more fickle than the business one.
