The grocery chains that specialize in value are and will do better than the upscale ones. Although most of the stocks have seen a run-up due to flight to safety, several of the companies are doing fairly well, which in this market is great. The stocks of companies that serve the high end will continue to suffer until the economy improves. The grocery sector is a good safe play, as long as you stay with the better preformers in the sector.

I agree with the following statements made by readytoretire.
The grocery sector is a good safe play, as long as you stay with the better performers in the sector.
However even this sector will underperform market in the next 18 months. Some discount grocery companies have better market than others.
