Dave, I haven't compared many, so I'm not sure if it's the best, but I like Fidelity. If you are a frequent trader, you can get $8 trades and a software package called Active Trader Pro, which is a nice trading platform with quotes, charts, ability to set up indicators, trendlines, etc. Fidelity also has another software package which allows you to back test trading ideas to see how they performed.

I find that Think or Swim has the best trading platform and has streaming real time quotes for Stock, Options, and Forex. Think or Swim is going to be acquired by TD Ameritrade this summer and their stuff will be available on TD Ameritarade. If you trade options, the analyze tool is the best out there.

There are some limitations on Fidelity's info: they don't cover pink-sheets listings (the securities of many firms that aren't ADR's are listed on Nasdaq Pink Sheets...and they aren't weeny fly-by-nights, such as CanRoys and delisted ADRs such as the huge utilities: RWE aand Suez)...they don't give fundamentals for ETFs and CEFs in a reliable form...and they may not report the dividends accurately. For trading on ARCA, Fidelity may have excellent data, but seeting up watch lists and alerts is awkward. Their execution and record-keeping is mostly good, with the exception of some Closed-End funds, where their 3rd party reporting of the tax staus of dividends and interest is faulty...so 1099s may need careful scrutiny.
