I invest $2000. in any stock, keep it for say, 6 mo., then sell at no gain.
should TDAmeritrade, or whoever, take out taxes before they return the money ($2000.) to me?

The only reason that I can think of is if you said you were subject to backup withholding.

if there is no gain there are no taxes!!!. WHo is buried in Grants tomb?? But no, they will not take out taxes unles you ask them to and then its only in a tax deferred account such as an IRA.

There would be NO taxes dues, however, you have a slight loss in your account, based on the commissions you paid. However, they will not a part of your tax calculations.
