As long as there are retail brokers to push mutual fund sales, they will exist. The poor performing ones normally get absorbed by better performing ones so that there is a survivor bias toward better performance than actual performance.

Knowledgeable investors will use ETF's which have the characteristics of stock and some of which have options for even more flexibility than mutual funds.

I doubt it. ETF"s generally are invested in a specific class of stocks whereas mutual funds are more generally invested under the principal of "don't put all your eggs in one basket". Some do specialize, But the appeal of one over the other dapends on the views of the individual and both will continue to have their place in the investment world.
