Yes I have seen some analysts speculating about that because they have some excellent resources and bigger fish are always looking for smaller fish to swallow.

It is in many cases CHEAPER for bigger established producers to replace their diminishing reserves through acquisitions than to do their own prospecting1

There are firms that simply SPECIALIZE in FINDING high quality mineralized resources and then J/V them to reduce their cost of proving up reserves to an N-131 compliant level, pre-feasability, and mine planning, each stage taking a lot of time and money! That is who only a small percentage of original mineral concessions are ever developed into a profitable mine, the costs are enormous and it can take decades from original discovery to an actual producing mine.
