Most likely, the equity holders will lose most of their investment. The people that will receive the majority of new shares will be the guys with Senior Bonds such as XGM and GMS. I have been warning people for months to sell the GM and grab the senior bonds which weren't trading much higher than the stock.

At this point the stock holders will lose if they sell their shares. Just hold for the long term. As it is chapter 11 that GM is filing for. They will re-organize and if successful those shares will once again increase in value. It appears that the government is trying to nationalize the financial and the auto industries. If that happens they're not going to let GM go into chapter 7 bankruptcy.
