Madman's answer is good, and I will add to that- make investments on paper first. Create an excel spreadsheet, put in the symbols, date of "purchase", share price, and then make a wide column and in it write the reasons you "bought" the shares on that date.

Periodically track your performance to see how you are doing. Take note of which stocks have done the best for you, and which have done poorly. This will help you to see errors in your thinking that can negatively affect your portfolio.
