You still own the stock, the value will increase as time goes on. PPC filed bankruptcy earlier this year, I had 2000 shares bought at 3.5/share, the price dropped to 23 cents. its now almost $5.00 per share. I am showing a profit while they are still in bankruptcy.
I now hold 5000 shares of GM my average cost is 2.84 per share. I'm sure the stock will rise to $5 by the end of this year. You don't lose any thing unless you sell your stock at a loss. I will come back in a chapter 11.

GMGMQ is the symbo traded on the pink sheetsl. As far as your shares of GM, you still own them, unless you sold them. And they still have value. And if GM is successful in it's re-organization, as the company again starts making a profit your shares will increase in value. GM filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy not chapter 7. If it had been chapter 7 your shares would be worthless.

Expect to be wiped out as the bondholders will try to force the old stockholders to be zeroed out. Even if not zeroed out, there will be a huge ratio reverse split of the old shares and very little value left. In any case don't expect a quick return to profitability as GM was a very sick company.
