A lot of fuss has been made about MS 65+ grades of coins: proof, UHI, double struck, etc. These are numismatic (collectible) purchases...not commodities as such. You pay a high premium above the gold content...and unless you really know the dealer, or it's from some responsible one, such as KITCO, you may not be able to sell it for the premium it was purchased for...and even if you did, if you're taxed in the U.S., the collectible rate is 28% of the gain...there's no 15% favorable cap gains rate.
Gold purchases, of bullion, are insurance against devaluation of the currency.
A numismatic investment is a possible hobby, but it isn't insurance. In my opinion, paying a high premium isn't any better an idea for bullion as a high 'load" charge on a mutual fund, or a purchase of some "hot" closed end fund that trades at a premium.
